Endura-Stone premium FRP composite is made from fiberglass, resin, and crushed marble. Sourced materials are spun-cast to distribute material evenly across mold walls. The result is a column hard like stone, fully paintable, and impervious to rot, insects, and moisture. FRP is our most-recommended material for exterior porches, pergolas, and covered entries. Structurally rated for loads between 6,000 and 20,000 lbs.
Purely decorative columns shipped in four panels ready to reassemble around a structural post. PVC works like wood but never rots or swells. Ideal for budget-conscious residential projects where wrapping a treated 4x4 or 6x6 post is required. Smooth paint-ready surface with excellent workability.
Endura-Lite pultruded fiberglass columns deliver the highest pound-for-pound load ratings. They are 65% lighter than FRP. Built for tall load-bearing porches and commercial colonnades where lighter columns are ideal but load requirements cannot be compromised.
Extruded aluminum delivers structural strength in a corrosion-resistant package. Best for storefronts and coastal projects where salt exposure is a concern. High structural capacity with factory finishes that eliminate field painting.
Load-bearing capacity depends on the material, size, and plan type. Unsplit fiberglass and aluminum columns provide structural support, while PVC and split columns are decorative only.
| Material | Load Capacity | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Fiberglass (FRP) | 5,000 – 20,000 lbs | Structural / Porch |
| Aluminum | 8,000 – 43,000 lbs | Structural / Coastal |
| Cellular PVC | Decorative Only | Column Wrap |
No. Split columns are decorative only and cannot carry weight. If you need a load-bearing column, choose a load-bearing material like fiberglass or aluminum in an unsplit plan type.
Any of our column materials can wrap a structural post. PVC column wraps are the industry standard for this application because they feature interlocking joints that snap together easily and require zero maintenance. Fiberglass columns can also wrap a post when ordered split, and aluminum columns are available as snap-together post wraps.
Yes. Load-bearing columns carry weight whether they're required to or not, so they work equally well as decorative columns or in structural applications.
No. Column wraps are decorative, either because the material isn't structural (PVC) or because the column is split to install around a post. When you use a wrap, the structural post inside it carries the weight.
Fiberglass, PVC, polyurethane, and wood columns can all be painted with an exterior-grade acrylic latex primer and paint. Aluminum columns come primed or pre-finished. Wood columns can be stained, and polyurethane columns can be gel-stained.
Yes, but since columns aren't rated for lateral movement, they must wrap a structural post that is anchored to concrete. All of our columns are hollow and can house an interior structural support.
To select the right width or diameter, a common rule of thumb is that a column should be 1/8 to 1/10 of its height.
| Ceiling Height | Recommended Width / Diameter |
|---|---|
| 8 ft Ceiling | 8 – 12 inches |
| 9 ft Ceiling | 10 – 14 inches |
| 10 ft Ceiling | 12 – 15 inches |
| 12 ft Ceiling | 14 – 18 inches |
| 14+ ft Ceiling | 18 – 24 inches |
Measure floor-to-ceiling and order the next size up (e.g., for a 92" height, order an 8' column and trim on-site).
Yes. Fiberglass, PVC, and aluminum columns never rot, split, crack, or rust, and are insect-proof. Wood columns are also low maintenance when using durable species like cedar or mahogany.
While columns can be trimmed on-site, we can often provide custom-trimmed columns. Call our specialist team at 1-888-573-3768 to provide your accurate dimensions.
